Scaffold: Someone Somehome Somewhere

Solo Exhibition, Hypha Studios, Priory Meadow, Hastings. November 2024

An exhibiton that focussed our concentration on the subject of home and housing, on the structures and spaces that we weave in and out of, reflecting the scaffolding and framework that we build ourselves on.

Developments that promise connection and community, can also disconnect and isolate. A home is a basic human need that offers safety and sanctuary but can removed or destroyed in an instant.

The utopian town development table is set as if in a domestic setting. The absence of people within the work, hints at the private and collective rituals that permeate our daily lives, and which we all find ourselves performing in. The inside becomes the outside as we conjure up imagined stories and narratives.

The use of different materials patchworks the structures together. Paper has been cut, folded, stitched into sculptural forms; domestic packaging (pill boxes, juice cartons, toiletry boxes) has been repurposed to provide moulds for the concrete structures. The pen and ink drawings bleed through the paper to reveal blurred imagery forming a new visual landscape - a series of portable architectures that can be unfolded, flattened and rebuilt elsewhere. The piece also pays homage to the resilience of communities continually rebuilding after displacement and upheaval.
